Start the day at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This captivating place documents the atrocities that the Khmer Rouge carried out against both their political enemies and thousands of everyday Cambodians. The most notorious of the 189 known interrogation centers in Cambodia was S-21, housed in a former school and now called Tuol Sleng for the hill on which it stands. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were detained, and tortured there, often in primitive brick cells built in former classrooms.
Today's second stop is at Choeung Ek known as the Killing Fields; this site was once where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women, and children took place. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rogue, led by Pol Pot. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days.
