TOUR DESCRIPTION

This tour starts at Kaura at 09:00am

Note, this is a small group experience. You will have the opportunity to meet fellow travellers on this tour.

Just an hour journey from your Hotel in South Bali, today you will be taken to the unspoilt village of Manggis to experience the daily life of Balinese farmers. Upon arrival, a friendly Balinese man will greet and welcome you as he looks forward to sharing his knowledge about farming and how the foods we eat end up on our tables. Throughout the day, get stuck into the day-to-day activities of a Balinese farm.

Walk along farmers trails to reach the organic rice field. From the farmer, you will hear that these organic farming practices align with Hindu Balinese beliefs of protecting the earth and being kind to nature. Learn about their story – how they went from previous farming methods using chemical pesticides that damaged the land to beginning their organic rice-planting journey.

During planting season, take off your shoes and get in the mud to plant some rice. Your new farmer friend will show how many seeds to plant and the technique of walking backwards while making sure you give enough space for the rice to grow. When it’s harvest season, the village will have beautiful yellow fields ready to reap. Typically, the rice crop reaches maturity 105 – 150 days after planting. Harvesting in Manggis is done manually, minimizing grain damage and maintaining the outstanding quality of the organic rice. Harvesting activities include cutting with sickles, stacking, and threshing.

And, when the crops are in the growing stage, help the farmer nurse them with the organic fertilizer made on-site.

The great thing about the farm at Manggis is you will see the three stages of rice farming at any time of year – so get involved with planting, nurturing, and harvesting whenever you visit. The guests will be able to indulge in traditional snacks at the farmer community hall.
