We ride through a lush valley with small villages, then into farmland that is varied in topography and in produce. Fruit trees are the mainstay, but there is rice and vegetables grown also. There are some artists retreats tucked away here and there, and people out here are very friendly.

Ob Khan National Park

We don’t enter the park, but instead skirt around it where we ride under the shade of broad teak leaves and pass some quite remote villages where chickens will be wandering around and the locals will cheer you on in your efforts.  A stop at a small, roadside café is a nice place to enjoy a cold juice or coconut and some local snacks.

Rajapruek Royal Gardens

As we ride back towards town, we encounter a large, manicured garden known as Rajapruek Royal Gardens. These are stunning botanical gardens featuring an impressive Royal Pavillion. We can take a wander here and enjoy a cool drink before we transfer back to Chiang Mai by van.

Visitors will learn about ChangChill’s four resident elephants, learn some new facts about Asian Elephants, and meet the mahouts. While in elephant area, guests will be able to ask questions and guides will deliver a “live lecture” about elephant conservation, elephant behavior, and interesting facts about elephants like how much they eat, sleep, weight, etc.

11.30AM: Visitors arrive at a rest station for traditional Thai refreshments – The rest station is above a mud pit, where on a hot day, the elephants love to bathe and play together. Visitors enjoy their refreshments and watch from above, trying to avoid getting sprayed with bits of mud being thrown around from down below.
12.00 PM: Visitors move down to the riverside sala where they learn a bit about enrichment, and help fill feeding tubes with corn, sugar cane, grass, bananas and any other supplementary food on hand. During and after lunch, visitors will be able to enjoy the view of the elephants eating through the treats that were stashed in the fencing from the elephant observation deck.

12.15 PM: Visitors having a lunch, we serve Thai vegetarian food.
The day ends with a short discourse about what the guests learned about elephants and how they continue to help elephants even after leaving Thailand.

1.30 PM: Traditional herb lesson: Visitors will gather around ChangChill’s traditional herb garden to learn which plants, leaves, roots, and vines are used as medicine for healing both elephants and people. Visitors will collect several species of planted herbs, or wild growing species in the vicinity, and use them in their next activity.

Elephant cooking class: Visitors will sit in a circle at the riverside sala and will prepare four servings of supplements for the four elephants. The guide will explain details about elephant health, diet, and the benefit of each of the added ingredients. Mahouts will join in this activity when possible, so visitors get to know the elephant that they’re “cooking” for and the mahout who cares for her.

3.00 PM: Finish one day program.

4.30-5.00 PM: Transfer back to your hotel.

  • A memorable adventure in rural Chiang Mai.
  • Get behind the wheel of your very own tuk-tuk.
  • Learn all about the caring for elephant.

Inclusions:

  • Round trip transfer.
  • Tuk Tuk driving training.

Tour Description:

Starting Time: 07:30 AM - Ending Time: 06:00 PM

07:45 – 08:15AM: Our team will pick you up from your hotel in Chiang Mai between 07:45 and 08:15 (the exact time will be confirmed once we know where you’re staying!) and
you’ll then transfer by private minivan. to The Tuk Tuk Club’s base, nestled in the Mae Wang valley, around 45-60 minutes from the city.

09:00 –09:30AM (APPROXIMATELY): On arrival in Mae Wang our team will introduce you to your Tuk Tuks and begin your driver training. If you don’t want to drive a Tuk Tuk, don’t worry, you will still have a superb day and you can enjoy the joys of nature’s air-conditioning from the breeze in the very comfortable back seats.
The training itself takes places off-road and leas you gently through all the controls of the Tuk Tuks and gives you plenty of time to get used to these wonderful vehicles under the watchful eye of us training team!

10:30AM (APPROX): The Tuk Tuks are pretty easy to get to trips with and once everyone is feeling comfortable behind the wheel (and has passed the driving test) you’ll head through tiny rural roads, snaking through farming villages and past rural Temples. One of our guides always drives the lead Tuk Tuk making sure that you don’t lose your way and no-one is tempted to go too fast! With frequent stops to explore and, importantly, to make sure everyone has a good opportunity to drive, you’ll get a great insight into authentic, real, rural life in Northern Thailand.

12:30PM (APPROX): By lunchtime you’ll arrive at the elephant home where you’ll not only learn about the past, present and future of Thai Elephants but also have the opportunity to interact with these wonderful animals.

NOTE: The elephant home we visit is a very small operation with elephants who have been successfully taken out of the trekking industry and now have a far more relaxing life. The experience at the home is very personal with strictly limited numbers of visitors a day and the staff are very friendly and incredibly passionate about the elephants in their care.

Once you’ve been introduced to the elephants you’ll be able to help the mahouts feed them.

Elephants eataround 15% of their body weight every day so this is a non-stop operation!

Next it’s time for you to enjoy some food yourself and have a tasty and filling Thai lunch sitting right next to the elephants giving you the opportunity to continue watching the elephants and seeing how they interact.

2:00PM (APPROX): After lunch you’ll walk with the mahouts and their elephants (NOTE: No elephant riding is allowed) through the local countryside to the river where you’ll watch the mahouts wash the elephants and keep cool. Watching the elephants enjoy the river and play as a family is a wonderful experience.

3:00PM (APPROX): Now it’s time to enjoy travel of a slightly different kind as you float lazily along the local river on a traditional bamboo raft. Don’t worry, there are no big rapids along the way! Rather this is a great way to see the local surroundings from a different angle and have a huge amount of fun negotiating the twists and turns of the river as your expert rafter guides you downstream.

4:OOPM (APPROX): It’s time to jump back into your Tuk Tuk and wind your way back down the valley enjoying your last moments behind the wheel of a real Thailand ‘icon’. The road curves and sweeps gently down the valley and through some great scenery and small villages – don’t forget your camera!

4:45PM (APPROX): On arriving back at base you’ll transfer back into a minivan and we’ll take you back to your hotel, arriving around 6:00PM giving you plenty of time in the evening to reflect on the incredible day you’ve had and the fact that you’re now a member of The Tuk Tuk Club!

6:00pm (APPROX): Arrive back in Chiang Mai city

Note: The minimum age for travelers on this one day adventure is 5 years old.

Requirement: All travelers who wish to drive a Tuk Tuk MUST have a
driving license from their own country (manual gear) and ideally an International License (particularly for
those whose Driving License is not in English). Please don’t forget to bring your driving license – we
will need to make a copy of this before you start your driver training
