Meet your guide where Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức set himself on fire in June 1963, producing one of the defining photographs of the 20th century. Thousands pass this corner without knowing what happened here. You will not. A few streets away stands a house you would never notice. That was precisely the point. Beneath its floor, Trần Văn Lai and his network concealed nearly two tonnes of weapons in preparation for the 1968 Tet Offensive. Descend through the hidden entrance into an operation conducted inside a city that believed it was watching everything.

Back above ground, climb into a cyclo and continue through Bàn Cờ, the “chessboard” neighbourhood named for its dense web of narrow, intersecting lanes. Stop at a neighbourhood café for traditional “sock coffee,” brewed through a cloth filter, before continuing to the Reunification Palace. Its ceremonial halls, presidential chambers and command rooms remain suspended in the final days of South Vietnam. Together with your guide, walk through the spaces from which a government watched the war close in, until tanks entered the palace grounds on 30 April 1975.

Continue on foot to the War Remnants Museum. Explore the museum grounds with your guide, surrounded by aircraft, tanks and other military equipment from the war. Then head inside to experience its powerful galleries independently and at your own pace. Outside, Saigon returns. At Turtle Lake, discover the feng shui legend connecting its unusual design to the palace you have just left. Then finish on Book Street, where the tour ends and the city hands you back: free to browse, find dinner or continue into the evening.

This morning, a 2-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh city takes us to My Tho, a gateway to the Mekong Delta. Here, we will board a motorized wooden sampan to begin our journey on the mighty Mekong River around
Tan My and Thoi Son Islands where numerous floating fish-farms and houseboats have been docked for decades. Disembark at one of the floating farms, interact with fishermen at work and learn about the fishing industry in this beautiful area. 

Switch to a rowing boat for a slow ride along the small canals shaded by water coconut trees. Then hop on bicycles to explore the green-lush island covered by hectares of gardens specialized in growing grapefruits, coconuts, bananas, durian, jack fruits, longans. Stop at a family to learn about the process of nourishing mushrooms.

 At the verdant garden of Mr. Hai Phuong, see his farm of cows, pigs, chickens, fishing pond, and enjoy fresh seasonal fruits picked from the garden.

Enjoy lunch with Mekong delicacies at a family’s garden where you could also see the hostess making “banh khot” (Vietnamese savory mini pancakes) – a popular but delicious local dish. Further our exploration by bicycle to see more cottage industries in the backstreets of this tranquil island: home-made moonshine locally branded over 3 generations; a bee farm with collection of farming, gardening, and fishing tools used over generations and meet a professional craft weaver to see her artistic craftworks such as straw hat, water hyacinth basket and bracelet. 

We then re-boarded our motorized boat for the cruise to return to the mainland. Bid farewell to our boat captain and take the drive back to Ho Chi Minh, arriving in the late afternoon.

Then, sink your teeth into the flavors of the South. You will take a leisurely walk through the Ban Co Market leading to Nguyen Thien Thuat Street and enjoy a scrumptious savory crêpe (banh xeo) and fresh spring rolls at Madam Nga’s spot. Finish things off with a taste of one of the city's most popular dishes: hu tieu. Dating back to the 1960s, it can be served as a soup or dry with no broth. 

End with a tasting of fried rice flour (bot chien), a very popular local street dish that comes along with eggs, onions, and dipping in a mixed homemade sauce with shredded papaya.
